Rent payments: community housing
Last published 05 Apr 2018
The Community and Private Market Housing Directorate aims to ensure that community housing is affordable, which means that it is available at a cost that you are able to pay. A system of rent rebates is in place to ensure that community housing is affordable.
It is your responsibility to pay your rent on time and in full.
Under the rent rebate system, community housing providers charge market rent for their dwellings. If you cannot afford this rent (based on your assessable income), you can apply for a rent rebate. The rebate is deducted from the market rent to calculate your contribution, you then pay this amount to your housing provider. This means that you will not spend more than 25% of your assessable income on rent.
If you are assessed as eligible for Commonwealth Rent Assistance, the level of rebated rent will be adjusted to take this additional income into account.
