Education and training initiatives for social housing clients

Under Future Directions for Social Housing in NSW the Department of Communities and Justice is helping social housing clients take advantage of economic opportunities through new and expanded programs that help you build housing independence.

Career Pathways

The Career Pathways program helps you train for a job while supporting you through the process.

The program is currently being delivered by Wesley Mission. This program is in its third and final year and ends on 30 June 2019.

The program is operating in seven locations across NSW:

• Sydney
• Western Sydney
• Central Coast
• Hunter New England
• Mid North Coast
• Northern NSW
• South Western Sydney.

Courses include:

• Business
• Retail Aged Care
• Horticulture
• Community Service
• Hospitality
• Disability

Career Pathways can help you to overcome some of the common barriers to training – like travel, costs and childcare – and gain on-the-job experience.

Eligibility

You may be eligible for Career Pathways if you are:

• living in social housing (public, community or Aboriginal housing)
• living in crisis or supported accommodation
• receiving DCJ private rental assistance
• on the NSW Housing register
• over 17 and meet the school leaving requirements

Opportunity Pathways

From 1 March 2019 the Opportunity Pathways program commences and will take over from Career Pathways in locations across NSW.

Opportunity Pathways is an exciting new program that will link social housing clients to training and employment opportunities. The program is free and voluntary, and will operate for three years.

The program offers wrap around support and flexible individualised case planning that will help clients aspire to create positive change. Other core components of the program include:

• case management
• pre-employment preparation
• employment and post-employment support
• housing independence support
